AFC Toronto tightened their grip on top spot in the standings with a 3-1 win over Halifax Tides FC on Friday night at York Lions Stadium. Despite an early own goal setback, Toronto bounced back quickly with a dominant performance and three unanswered goals.
It was Halifax who found themselves ahead early, though not by their own doing. A miscommunication in the back saw Toronto’s Sarah Rollins accidentally redirect a cross into her own net just five minutes in. But the hosts didn’t let the early mishap shake them.
Hunter Leads the Comeback
Kaylee Hunter pulled Toronto level in the 21st minute with a composed finish inside the box, and continued her standout play after the break. Just three minutes into the second half, she struck again, this time from distance, to give Toronto their first lead of the match.
Esther Okoronkwo added insurance in the 52nd minute with a low strike into the bottom corner, capping off a four-minute flurry that completely turned the tide in favour of the hosts.
Match Stats
- Possession: Toronto controlled 55% of the ball, dictating the tempo in midfield
- Total Shots: The home side outshot Halifax 14-4 in a commanding offensive display
- Passing Accuracy: Toronto passed at 82% accuracy, while Halifax trailed slightly at 78%
Looking Ahead
With the win, AFC Toronto improves to 6-3-1 on the season and sits first overall heading into the international break. Halifax Tides FC falls to 1-6-1 and remains in sixth. The league resumes in July with Halifax hosting Calgary on July 7 and Toronto facing Ottawa at home on July 10 in what’s shaping up to be a top-of-the-table tilt.
